Hayes & Yeading fielded a near full strength side at Preston Park for this Middlesex Senior Cup tie but came away empty handed and while the hosts almost certainly deserved to progress, the scoreline was somewhat flattering in the end.

Things nearly started in the worst possible way for United when Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz's attempted clearance was charged down by Mark Sargeant inside the box but the United stopper did well to deny the Hares striker from close range after he had brought the ball under control.

Having survived to strong United penalty appeals that referee Mr Rea waved away, the Hares went close on 19 minutes when a free-kick into the United box fell to Seldyn Grant, his effort came back off the inside of the post and Anthony Furlonge was in the right place to clear off the line.

United's first on-target strike came in the 25th minute when Kamaron English collected a weak Harefield clearance and advanced to the edge of the 18 yard box before striking a shot that keeper Michael Pearce bundled around the post.

Two minutes later it was United's turn to hit the woodwork, Geoff Mitchell ran at the Hares back-line before hitting a shot from 20 yards that beat Pearce only to come back into play off the left-hand upright before being cleared.

As the half-time break approached, Danny Burnell was first to an Adam Everitt shot but fired weakly to Clarke and then the Hares stopper made an excellent save diving to his left to push away an angled Jack Mills effort from 25 yards out.

Just two minutes remained when the deadlock was broken and it was the home side who took the lead with Jaimez-Ruiz being somewhat caught out by a 35 yard drive from Daniel Fleming that he managed to palm away but only as far as Ben Porter who fired across the United keeper into the far corner.

The United faithful hoping a swift talking to at half-time would fire United into life from the off in the second half were to be somewhat disappointed when it was the home side who came out with their tails up. Hares skipper Paolo Cicero going close early on and this was followed a few minutes later by Jake Girt latching onto a loose pass 20 yards out and forcing a good diving save from Jaimez-Ruiz with a first time drive.

United could and maybe should have been level minutes later when Burnell collected an off target Mitchell shot inside the area, having controlled the ball his shot on the turn was wide of the target.

Both sides continued to play the ball around but for the next 20 minutes or so it was defences on top as any effort aimed at troubling the two custodians was snubbed out before it got that far. The Hares missed a golden chance to double their advantage in the 81st minute when Jaimez-Ruiz and Everitt got in each others way and the ball dropped to Porter who with the goal gaping screwed his shot wide.

Within a minute Jaimez-Ruiz did well to get down and block away a Grant effort after a free-kick had fallen invitingly to the Hares midfielder 8 yards from goal. At the other end, Furlonge forced a save and grab from Pearce before with two minutes left the move of the game for the home side doubled their lead. Cicero collected the ball inside the United half before feeding a perfect ball into Girt's run and the midfielder fired first time past Jaimez-Ruiz.

Their was still time for one more strike for the home side who were awarded a penalty in the seventh minute of added time, Cicero squeezing his kick in off the post and Jaimez-Ruiz who had guessed correctly.

With ten added minutes played, United substitute Jake Reid forced a good save from Pearce but for United it was too little far too late to deny the Hares a place in the next round.
