Playing for almost an hour with ten men after the contentious red card shown to Anthony Furlonge in the 38th minute, Hayes & Yeading continued to fight hard before going down to a single Craig McAllister strike just after the break.

Phil Babb made two changes to his starting XI as available again Adam Everitt and Jake Reid came in for Allen Bossman and Kamaron English who both dropped to the bench, joining new faces Walter Figueira and Tyler Wootton alongside a returning Louie Soares.

The first half was to be backs to the wall for the visitors against the big spending hosts and in the tenth minute Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz saw his first action when a long Michael Green throw-in was flicked goalwards, the United keeper reacting well to push the ball out with skipper Dean Inman clearing to safety.

With 13 minutes played we saw the first contentious moment of the game when Ben Strevens held off the persistent Kelvin Bossman before lashing out with his right arm catching Bossman in the face. A minor fracas between both sets of players ensued and Strevens was let off with a warning, much to the dismay of the United dugout.

It was the midway point in the half before the home side got near to troubling Jaimez-Ruiz again, Jai Reason played the ball wide to Ben Strevens, his cross was met firmly by McAllister in the middle but Jaimez-Ruiz dived superbly to his left to push the goalbound effort away.

Minutes later another big punt forwards from the Eastleigh defence saw Yemi Odubade collect the ball and sweep in from the right flank, his shot going across the face of the United goal and wide. This was to be the tricky wingers last involvement as he pulled up having shot and was soon replaced by Jamie Collins.

Just past the half hour mark it looked as if the hosts would take the lead when Green played the ball fully from left to right where Reason collected, his deep cross looked to be providing a simple head in for Stuart Fleetwood at the far post but he didn't bargain on the tenacity of Charlie Wassmer, who played despite being unwell, the United defender throwing an excellent block on the line before clearing.

The task for Phil Babb's side was made more difficult in the 38th minute when a 50/50 challenge for the ball in the Eastleigh box saw Anthony Furlonge and Green's boots meet with the home defenders yell causing referee Eaton to discuss the challenge with his assistant who between them deemed it a cautionable offence for the already carded United man and he was dismissed.

United's first effort in anger came in first half stoppage time when an Adam Everitt cross from the right found Jack Mills on the penalty spot but he could not keep his header down.

The home side with an extra man started to push forwards quickly and finally edged in front in the 54th minute when McAllister rose highest to meet a Reason corner, his header striking the post and bouncing up into the roof of the net despite Jaimez-Ruiz's desperate attempt to claw it out.

Minutes later it could have been two as another Reason corner was headed out by Kelvin Bossman to Glen Southam, the Eastleigh playmakers shot being well fielded by Jaimez-Ruiz.

Despite having a man advantage, the home side showed little invention going forwards and were almost made to pay for this as United came out of defence and started to push for an equaliser. Having worked the ball across the middle of the park to substitute Kamaron English, he fed Kelvin Bossman who forced Ross Flitney to gets his gloves dirty from 20 yards.

With just over fifteen minutes to play United struck the frame of the Spitfires goal twice in 60 seconds. Jake Reid did well to hold the ball near the left corner flag before picking out Frankie Merrifield who hit a rasping drive from 30 yards that cannoned off Flitney's crossbar and appeared to be spinning back in only to be tipped over by the alert keeper.

Within a minute it was the post that stopped United drawing level as English received the ball on the right and nipped between two covering defenders before hitting a shot for the near post that Flitney did superbly well to tip onto the post and the ball was eventually cleared.

Sadly this was to be United's last real look at goal with the last chance of the game falling to the home side when Dean Beckwith met a Reason corner at the near post only to head over the top.
