For the all important visit of Boreham Wood to Kingfield, Manager Phil Babb made four changes to his starting line-up of less than 48 hours earlier. Returning to the starting line-up were Adam Everitt post suspension, Niall McManus, Geoff Mitchell and Andrew Musunga as the gaffer shuffled his limited pack to rest some tired legs.

After a short delay due to a pre-match injury to scheduled referee Ian Cooper, the game finally got underway just 10 minutes late with assistant referee Casimir Nzenga taking over in the middle.

Early chances for both sides saw Pat Cox loop a header just over the Wood crossbar after a Luke Williams free-kick had been helped on at the near post and at the other end Mario Noto tried his luck with a 20 yard free-kick from a central position but his effort never looked like testing Charlie Crowley in the United goal.

With 16 minutes played a curling free-kick put in from the right by Musunga just evaded the incoming boot of Dean Inman before curling out wide of the far post and a couple of minutes later as play continued to swing from end to end, Matthew Whichelow turned Everitt on the Wood right and advanced into the box only to fire weakly straight at Crowley.

The game moved into a bit of a neutral phase for the best part of 20 minutes before Crowley was tested again as former United striker Kudus Oyenuga played the ball to another who has previously worn United red, Graeme Montgomery, but his shot had no power and Crowley swept up and that was the first half done and dusted with little incident.

The opening five minutes of the second half were in total contrast to the first as three excellent openings came and went. A long punt from the back by the visitors saw Oyenuga powering his way to the corner of the United box, Inman tracked him and did enough to force him to pull his effort across goal, narrowly missing the far corner.

Having almost gone behind, United should have taken the lead in the 49th minute after excellent work on the right bye-line from Niall McManus, the young Millwall loanee picked out Mitchell in the middle but he fired softly straight at a relived James Russell in the Wood goal.

Sixty seconds later Crowley was forced into the first real save of the game when Montgomery collected a crossfield pass in the left corner of the area and fired in a low volley that the young United reserve keeper did well to push away with Oyenuga sliding the rebound wide.

Pat Cox then climbed highest to a Chimdi Akubuine centre but was too high with his header shortly after at the other end Whichelow had gone close with a shot across the face of goal and wide.

Just under 20 minutes remained when Russell was given a serious test for the first time as United upped the urgency for a winner. Matty Harriott, playing the final game of an excellent loan spell, drove forwards for a good 20 yards before making space for a shot from the edge of the box that forced Russell to go full stretch to tip it over the top. Musunga’s resultant corner was headed towards the top corner by Ben Gerring only for the ball to be headed off the line, Williams retrieved on the left and sent over another cross that this time was met by Inman but he could not keep his header below the crossbar.

United were not to be denied a vital three points though, with just 8 minutes left of the 90 on referee Nzenga’s watch, Musunga played a free-kick in from the right, Cox controlled the ball on the edge of the area and clipped a superb ball through to where both Freddie Ladapo and Williams found themselves, the Kidderminster loanee striker taking charge and bouncing a shot past Russell much to his and everybody in reds’ obvious joy.

After a tense six minutes of stoppage time, referee Nzenga blew for time on a vital three points for Hayes & Yeading who have just two fixtures remaining in what has proved to be a strength sapping end to the campaign for all concerned.
