Hayes & Yeading failed to bring their recent success on the road to Kingfield this afternoon as a two goal half time advantage was surpassed by three strikes from the visitors after the break.
With Anthony Furlonge not fully recovered from the knock he received at Farnborough, Phil Babb replaced him with a first start for striker Geoff Mitchell as United again switched to three central defenders for the visit of fifth placed Bishop's Stortford.
Early chances for both sides were to fall to centre-backs as first for the visitors, Sean Francis arrived at the near post with Reece Prestedge's corner kick striking him on the hip before going wide and then for United, Luke Williams' shot from 20 yards was blocked to Dean Inman but his effort was also blocked before being cleared.
Frankie Merrfield then struck the side netting from a tight angle before United took a 19th minute lead. Charlie Wassmer's searching ball from the back picked out Geoff Mitchell, the big front man doing well to hold off Ashley Miller before firing a shot from an acute angle that keeper Joe Wright appeared to have covered only to let the ball squirm under him and roll into the net.
Two minutes later Adam Everitt came to Uniteds rescue with a spectacular goalline clearance after Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz had allowed a cross to slip through his fingers, the ball fell to Callum McNaughton 8 yards out and with the goal gaping his shot was superbly turned over by Everitt's outstretched foot.
Francis then had another chance for the visitors but this time headed wide and as they tried to push for an equaliser Jaimez-Ruiz was beaten in the chase towards the corner flag by Kyle Vassell who with the United keeper back-pedaling crossed to his strike partner Cliff Akurang at the far post but his header went wide of the target.
United struck again just before the break, Williams played a perfect ball down the right side into Louie Soares run, the United man advancing into
the box before cutting inside Johnny Herd and firing across Wright into the far corner.
Sadly for United the second half did not go as planned and the luck started to go with the visitors when just six minutes in a wayward cross looked to be going in at the far post, Jaimez-Ruiz in trying to touch the ball over only forced it onto the crossbar giving Akurang the simplest of headers as the ball dropped back into play.
Just before the hour mark Dean Inman headed a Jack Mills free-kick wide of the post and within a minute the visitors should have been level after Jaimez-Ruiz palmed out a fierce Anthony Church drive which went straight to Matt Johnson who blazed over.
Openings were still being created by the home side as a Jake Reid cross was deflected just over Soares with McNaughton whacking the ball clear from inside the six yard box and the next chance fell to Mitchell who saw his header from Mills' free-kick clear the bar.
Then with 17 minutes left the visitors levelled the match. A neat chip over the United defence was taken on by Vassell who forced an excellent diving save from Jaimez-Ruiz, pushing the ball out for a corner. Prestedge's kick seemed to go through the United keepers hand under heavy pressure with Church sticking out a boot to roll the ball home.
Ten minutes later and all three points were going back to Hertfordshire when a deep cross was headed back across goal to Prestedge who headed in while appearing to be standing alone on the line, with no flag being raised for the expected offside, referee Laver awarded a somewhat contentious winning goal for Stortford.
