Phil Babb’s side earned another point on Thursday evening in a goalless draw with Basingstoke Town at Kingfield as we continue to fight to retain our place in the Skrill South.

With this being Hayes & Yeading’s third game in just five days, it was not surprising that Phil shuffled the pack a little, including a first start for the club by loanee Niall McManus in midfield.

The visiting Dragons almost took a tenth minute lead when Nathan Smart’s low centre from the right was deflected to Liam Enver-Marum who nudged the ball goalwards only to be denied by Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz’s quick reactions to push the ball away for a corner. The initial kick being put out for another that was met by David Ray but his downward header was gathered by Jaimez-Ruiz.

As United started pushing for an opener, Pat Cox headed wide after a decent centre from McManus and then Samir Bihmoutine should have done better when he advanced onto a Freddie Ladapo knock down but he leant backwards and fired over from 10 yards out.

Former United favourite Adam Green fired a free-kick wide of the post for the visitors before a long punt upfield saw Ladapo outpace Green and Jay Gasson into the Dragons area but despite beating keeper Louis Wells, the ball went the wrong side of the post.

Jaimez-Ruiz did well to swallow up a 20 yard drive by Nicholas Bignall and minutes later the same player should have done better when collecting a miss-hit Andrew Jenkinson shot in the 6 yard box only to screw his effort wide.

Jenkinson just two minutes later forced a save from the United keeper, having cut in from the right his powerful drive saw Jaimez-Ruiz do well to push the ball over the top. The final chance of the half came in stoppage time when a Jack Mills free-kick from 25 yards cleared the visitors goal without overly troubling Wells.

United very nearly opened the second half in perfect fashion. Cox won the ball in the air and picked out Bihmoutine who played the ball inside to Ladapo who with his back to goal controlled the ball and hit a dipping drive on the turn that only just cleared the Dragons goal with Wells at full stretch.

Chances in the second period were to be at a premium thereafter, Jaimez-Ruiz held an effort from range by Green while at the other end Cox met a Ben Brown centre but could not steer his effort under the crossbar.

The final half hour of the game saw tired legs start to take over with just two noteworthy openings being noted. The first drew another fine save from Jaimez-Ruiz who did well to parry a powerful 12 yard drive from former Hayes FC man Shaun McAuley with Ben Gerring getting “crunched” as he cleared the loose ball.

Eight minutes were left on the watch and the final chance of the game fell to the fresh legs of United substitute Andrew Musunga who was inches over with an angled drive after being set up by Luke Williams who had collected another Cox knock down.
