Hayes & Yeading United's under 18s team got back to winning ways with a very impressive comeback victory over league leaders Camberley Town on Monday evening at Farm Park.

Once again, manager Simon East had several players missing for the encounter but the players selected performed admirably to cut the lead at the top of the Ryman League Western Division to one point.

The first half was close throughout. Elliott Legg crossed for Riquel Samuel early on and the forward put his snap shot wide of the far post. Play then switched to the other end where Alfie Borszcz lobbed the advancing Melvin Minter but saw his shot drop just the wrong side of the post.

Play ebbed and flowed on a bumpy pitch as David Manu latched onto Samuel's pass but his effort went straight into Harry Bowman's arms. Then a delightful move down the right hand side originating from Legg at right back, saw Ross Seldon and debutant Harry Tew-Robinson exchange one touch passes before the former fired just over the bar.

Both Legg and Andrew Dean were causing several problems when advancing from their full back positions and United enjoyed a good passage of play at this point. Lewis Cole's corner was headed goalwards by Prosper Ezewuzie but Tew-Robinson, in trying to deceive keeper Bowman, diverted the ball onto the roof of the net.

An Aaron Woodyer free kick on 37 minutes was very well dealt with by Minter as his cross looked like curling in. However, three minutes later, another Woodyer free kick from a similar position caused mayhem in front of Minter and Borszcz was on hand to apply a finishing touch.

Smarting from that goal, United stepped up a gear in the second half and within five minutes, the game was turned on its head. Cole threaded a throughball which Manu and Woodyer (now at right back after a half time reshuffle) contested and Woodyer tripped Manu for a United penalty which Samuel converted just beyond the reach of Bowman.

Just a minute later, Ezewuzie played the ball down the line and Dean ran at the Camberley defence at a pace which they couldn't cope with. Although he unselfishly tried to square the ball for a team mate in the middle, the ball came back to him off Michael Gregory and he firmly planted a right footed shot into the roof of the net.

A remarkable sequence of blocked shots followed by a smart diving save by Minter saw United's lead preserved soon afterwards but once again, United were to assume control. Seldon and Tew-Robinson combined again, this time to set up Jake Dark whose shot from the edge of the area had the sting taken out of it by Ben Holmes before Bowman gathered it in. Then a one-two between Tew-Robinson and Samuel ended with the former smashing the ball wide from a virtually impossible angle. More good approach play from Seldon and Legg culminated in a Legg back heel which Seldon latched onto and drilled his shot across the face of goal.

But United's lead was never assured until the 68th minute when a third goal came. After all their intricate approach play, it was a route one goal that settled it as Minter's long clearance from his hands bounced and Gregory's back header proved too short, allowing Tew-Robinson in to lob the advancing Bowman.

Neither side looked like scoring afterwards, although Manu went close with a prodded shot after a series of rather aimless headers in the Camberley penalty area. As it was, this suited United fine as an important three points were confirmed upon referee Mr Simpson's final whistle.
