Hayes & Yeading’s under 18s bowed out of the Middlesex Youth Cup on Monday evening losing by the only goal of the game to a very good Brentford side at United's temporary Farm Park home.

The opening 15 minutes saw The Bees having a large share of possession without really troubling the United defence. On 19 minutes they went very close to breaking the deadlock though when Seika Jatta beat Prosper Ezewuzie to the ball, his shot coming back off the upright to Montell Moore who forced a fine save from Melvin Moore in the United goal. The loose ball was tucked home by Jatta but he was flagged for offside.

Just before the half hour mark United’s first effort on goal came in from Riquel Samuel as he gathered the ball and hit a 20 yard shot that Bees stopper Jake Lewis was well behind.

Two minutes later a poor kick out from Minter saw the ball go straight to Jatta, Ezewuzie and Tom Marr did well to hold him up and when he did get his shot away, Minter was well placed to save.

Five minutes from the break Minter was again in action, this time stretching to tip over a Richard Ryan chip from the right side of the United area.

Minutes later and with United starting to get a hold on the game it was the upright that saved the Bees as Lewis Lavender sliced a Presley Nkame cross against his own post before the ball was scrambled clear by the Bees defence.

Samuel had the final effort of the half for United, his shot being deflected inches wide of the Brentford post.

Eight minutes into the second half Brentford scored what was to become the decisive goal. Minter’s weak goal-kick was picked off by Lavender, his centre taking a deflection that saw the ball bounce over Minter and into the far corner.

The goal boosted the Bees players’ confidence and they again started to take control of proceedings for the next 20 minutes. In this time two good openings came their way, Jatta’s 20 yard strike was well held by Minter who did even better with fifteen minutes to go as he pushed away a Fabian Rowe effort after the Brentford man had burst through into the area.

In the final ten minutes United really started to pressurise the Bees defence. Elliott Legg broke down the right flank before pulling the ball back, it was cut out by a Brentford defender but the ball was quickly collected by Samuel who saw his shot go just the wrong side of the upright.

With two minutes of the 90 remaining United again went agonisingly close as David Manu’s header from Samuel’s centre was again just wide of the target.

Stoppage time saw Lewis pull off a superb save to deny Flavio Tavares who hit a stinging volley after Lewis Cole’s corner was only part cleared and then with virtually the final touch of the game Manu ran onto a Lewis chip and fired home only for assistant referee Mr Sennett to flag Ezewuzie offside as he had gone for the same ball.
