Hayes & Yeading‘s under 18s hit top spot in the Ryman Youth League West with a hard fought victory over Ashford Town (Middlesex) at Farm Park.

United’s preparations were thrown at the start when striker Harry Tew-Robinson found himself stuck in a major traffic jam and couldn’t make it in time for the kick-off, his replacement up front being substitute ‘keeper Ryan Mondiwa.

As a match, the first half was immediately forgettable with both sides slugging it out in the middle of the park and very little being fired at either keeper, in fact the first notable effort came in stoppage time when Ashford played a free-kick to skipper Conor Molyneaux on the edge of the box, his neat lay off fell to Eva Batousal but his volley just cleared Melvin Minter’s goal.

The second half however saw United pick up the pace and it took just nine minutes for the deadlock to be broken. The ever lively Riquel Samuel exchanged passes with David Manu on the right before firing in a low centre that despite being cleared by a defender fell to Ross Seldon who promptly volleyed the ball into the top corner just out of keeper Tyler Tobin’s reach.

Four minutes later Manu again caused problems for the visitors defence and having burst into the area looked certain to have won a penalty having been tripped only for referee Mr Williams to overrule his flagging assistant and let play continue.

Just seconds later, United substitute Cheyenne Cripps turned his marker in the area and fired a shot across Tobin’s goal but wide of the far post.

In the 69th minute Ashford caused alarm in the United defence for the first time as Joel Large broke into the area on the left, his low centre looked to have given Batousal a tap-in but for a sliding challenge from Andrew Dean that took the ball off the striker boot inside the six yard box.

Seven minutes later Batousal should have done better when he finally beat the offside flag and raced towards goal, his finish however was far from accurate and cleared Minter’s goal by some distance.

With five minutes remaining United wrapped up the points as Eddie Keen turned the ball past Tobin from inside the area to double the hosts advantage.

A minute later Tobin did well to keep out a Dean near post drive after the left-back had cut in from the flank but this didn’t matter as the points were already secure and United took over from Staines atop the West Division
