Despite taking a seventh minute lead, Hayes & Yeading were trounced 7-1 at Wheatsheaf Park on Thursday evening leaving United precariously placed above the relegation zone and subsequently leading to Manager Tony O’Driscoll’s resignation the following day.
It all started so well for United as Daniel Wishart’s perfectly timed throughball found Luke Williams who strode forwards and placed the ball beyond the dive of Swans keeper Jack Turner to give the visitors the lead.
Nine minutes later it all started to go wrong when the United defence failed to clear out a loose ball in the box and it fell invitingly for Swans skipper David Wheeler who made no mistake from close range.
Sixty seconds later it could have been worse for the visitors as both Sam Cox and then Tom Cadmore were well placed to clear efforts off the line. United did go behind though on 26 minutes when Louis-Rae Beadle’s shot deflected off a defender and fell at the feet of an unmarked Tyrone Marsh who beat Brandon Hall from close range.
Mark Bentley was only inches away from an equaliser a minute later when he latched onto a Williams pass and his shot just cleared the crossbar. Lady luck was on the Swans’ side on the half hour though when a Wishart curler beat Turner only to come back off the post, Sam Corcoran collected the loose ball and also beat Turner only for Jordaan Brown to slid the ball off the line.
On the stroke of half time an Adam Bygrave clearance was charged down by Beadle who raced through on goal but was denied by Hall who saved his shot well and was then quick to dive onto the loose ball.
The second half capitulation that followed sent United fans scurrying away to their cars well before the full time whistle went, but United were not without chances of their own. In fact the first opening of the half fell to the visitors as Cox weaved his way into the Swans box only to be denied by Turner.
Turner was soon in action again as Corcroan latched onto a Williams cross only to be foiled by the Swans keeper who pushed the ball away diving to his left.
Minutes later it was three for the home side as Marsh took aim from a free-kick 20 yards out and placed the ball past Hall into the top corner of the United net. On the hour it was four as Sam Page rose unchallenged to power a corner past Hall from six yards out.
Five minutes later Turner was again called upon by the Swans as he pushed out another Corcoran effort, this time from Cox’s centre.
Troy Ferguson then went close for the Swans after getting his head to another corner before two strikes for the home side in less than 60 seconds saw the United contingent behind the goal virtually halve. Both goals were almost identical in execution as first Max Worsfold and then Dan Brown fired across Hall into the bottom corner.
The seventh went in during the second minute of added time when Hall was beaten by Ferguson at which time referee Degnarain brought proceedings to an early halt by sounding the final whistle before the three additional minutes were up.
