A last minute Manny Williams goal settled an entertaining and competitive pre-season friendly at Court Place Farm in Hayes & Yeading United’s favour.

With John Goddard, Pelé and Tobi Joseph reinstated into the starting line up and led for the first time by midfielder Sam Cox, United were able to gain a confidence boosting victory over a team in the parallel Blue Square Bet North division.

But it wasn’t an easy victory. In fact, United started rather slowly and the home side had the majority of the early possession without being able to create too much of a goal threat. 14 minutes in, Declan Benjamin got on the end of a Jamie Cook free kick but was unable to direct his header on target. Then Cox came to the rescue with a last ditch tackle to deny former United striker Steve Basham after a Paul Stonehouse cut back. However, their best chance came when Cook raced clear only to see his shot well blocked by the advancing James Beasant.

United grew into the game and after half an hour’s play, Tobi Joseph hit the side netting with an angled shot after good work on the by line by Kudus Oyenuga. Then from a short corner, Luke Williams found Cox on the edge of the area and his thumping goalbound shot was deflected away by Andy Ballard.

In the 38th minute, United took the lead. A free kick 30 yards out was floated to the back post by Luke Williams and Oyenuga took advantage of being unmarked and headed the ball down into the goal.

Immediately, Oxford responded and should have scored as Basham headed Cook’s free kick just over. However, United ended the half strongly. Manny Williams was denied a goal by a clearance off the line by Benjamin after a bit of a scramble in the penalty area. Then Oyenuga had a difficult half chance from Daniel Wishart’s cross which he headed off target.

The start of the second half was as cagey as the start of the first and it seemed that United were comfortably holding their hosts at bay, so City made multiple substitutions to try to change the pattern of the game as well as to give their squad game time.

The flow of the match was disrupted, but a moment of individual class was to light up this phase of the game. Tom Cadmore’s precise ball into Oyenuga seemed harmless enough until the forward turned and ran powerfully at the City defence. Surviving a strong challenge, he arrived in the penalty area at an angle but was still able to hit the ball across the keeper and into the far corner.

Oyenuga was on a hat-trick and he came close to scoring it with two long range efforts in quick succession after Luke Williams found him lurking outside the box waiting for a corner, both goalbound efforts being blocked by brave defending.

Rather out of the blue, Oxford City got one back when the newly introduced Jay Kalama was caught in possession and a powerful rising shot by City substitute Nabil Sharif from the edge of the area flew past Beasant.

From the kick off, Oyenuga tried an audacious 50 yard shot which almost embarrassed the home keeper but just cleared the cross bar.

After more substitutions, Oxford City equalised as Felipe Barcelos’s deep corner was headed in by the tall Oxford City substitute centre back Andy Gunn.

United sub Jacob Walcott looked lively in the closing stages and was unlucky when he cut inside from Manny Williams’ lay off and hit a curling shot which was saved low to the goalkeeper’s right. However, he was able to claim an assist for the late winner as he ran clear on the right hand side and provided a low centre which, although Luke Williams was unable to convert, his namesake Manny followed up with a clinical finish.
