Hayes & Yeading United came from behind to beat Hendon at The Hive in Edgware in the latest pre-season friendly in preparation for the Blue Square Bet South campaign.

The weather was far more like the usual pre-season friendly climate than the previous two encounters with sunny spells throughout the game. The surface was in excellent condition and the football from both sides was played at a decent pace and with controlled aggression.

The first half however, had few chances at either end although Hendon were able to capitalise twice during a five minute spell where the United defending was rather untidy. A warning of what was soon to come arrived in the 13th minute, as Scott Shulton broke on the left and his angled shot was pushed away by James Beasant. Tom Cadmore rather skewed his clearance against Belal Aite-Ouakrim’s knee and the ball looped up, kissed the bar and fell into the grateful Beasant’s hands.

Two minutes later, United were punished at the second attempt. Shulton, who was at the heart of a lot of Hendon’s best moves, threaded the ball through to Dave Diedhiou in the right hand channel and although his shot was well blocked by Beasant’s legs, Shulton followed up from the edge of the area with a shot which gave the keeper no chance.

Worse was to come. The usually reliable Cadmore got caught in possession and Bradley Wadkins burst through on goal. Although he hit his shot straight at Beasant, it had enough power to force its way through his block and into the net.

United settled, with Pelé providing a calming influence and Sam Cox and Josh Ekim probing in midfield. Daniel Wishart looked dangerous on the left but unfortunately had to be replaced by Victor Osobu before half time as a precaution. Hendon suffered a similar drawback when minutes afterwards, Aite-Ouakrim limped off.

Many changes were made during half time, with Hendon replacing nine more players and United five more. Making his first pre-season appearance for United was Johnny Goddard, a midfielder who was previously at Reading.

United got a goal back seven minutes into the half. Mark Bentley clipped a looping pass forward and Manny Williams eventually managed to control despite some close marking. Although his shot was bravely charged down by Lewis Rolfe, Bentley picked up the loose ball, beat his man and curled a fine shot into the top corner.

This spurred United on to search for an equaliser. Osobu went close soon afterwards with a shot which fizzed across the face of goal and Tobi Joseph turned his marker from Goddard’s throughball and fired a fierce left footed shot which Berkley Laurencin (back in goal following an injury to substitute keeper Sean Thomas) did well to tip over.

The equaliser came in the 69th minute. Yassin Moutaouakil clipped a ball to the far post and Bentley was able to rise highest and cushion a header back across goal and Manny Williams was well positioned to nod the ball in.

And just six minutes later, the game had turned on its head as Dan Spence’s crossfield pass found Moutaouakil who advanced on the right before sending in a low ball across goal for the onrushing Osobu to touch home.

Late on, Beasant produced a fine reaction save from Isaiah Rankin’s downward header following good work from Howard Hall on the right, but the victory was to be United’s ahead of a busy week at Beaconsfield Road.
