Tom Collins found the net for a third match in succession but it proved scant reward as Farnborough ran out winners.

The game started in lively fashion with both defences looking decidedly shaky on a heavy, clumpy pitch. It was only the ninth minute when the first goal came. United couldn't quite clear the ball from a corner and whene the dangerous looking Nic Ciardini sent a deep ball to the far post the ball was worked back to Josh Huggins whose shot from the edge of the area was deflected and looped into the bottom corner.

Just a minute later, Ciardini was marauding forward again and his fierce shot was tipped wide by the alert Brandon Hall.

After a very quick breakaway, United were soon back on terms. Collins showed the home defence a clean pair of heels and calmly rounded Jamie Norris and rolled the ball into the empty net behind him (pictured left).

United had two great chances to take the lead in the same passage of play as Alassane N'Diaye released Collins on the right and his low centre found the front man right in front of goal and he was just unable to make contact amid appeals that he was pushed from behind. The ball ran through to Luke Williams who got back to the by line and found the onrushing John Goddard who just failed to drag the ball accurately from behind him and directed it just wide of the net.

Out of the blue, United were punished by a second Farnborough goal. Possession was lost in midfield and a long ball caught out a static Untied defence as Dan Bennett got in behind, controlled well and fired the ball underneath the dive of Hall.

Calum Butcher completed a last ditch tackle to deny Ciardini as he bore down on goal, and at the other end N'Diaye had a shot deflected just wide by a lunging Dean Inman after collecting Tom Cadmore's long free kick neatly on his chest.

And just after Norris had denied Williams with a fingertip save after the winger had got free in the left channel, play switched tot he other end and Farnborough were able to stretch their lead. Another long ball allowed Reece Connolly to wriggle through a gap in the defence and he finished beyond Hall into the corner.

United's coaching team decided on a double half tiem substitution to try to turn fortunes around, giving Daryl McLean a rare first team outing and handing a debut to new midfield signing Sam Corcoran. After a period of play in which United pressed without really threatening, Corcoran finished off a fine move involving N'Diaye and Williams but fired his shot just over.

Hall was alert to gather in Bennett's rising shot from Tom Donegan's pass, but Untied once again went close as N'Diaye's knock down found Goddard a long way out from goal but the midfielder hit a rasping shot just wide.

Farnborough were to find another gear in the final quarter and after Connolly set up Donegan after his good work to outpace Adam Bygrave on the right flank, the forward should've done better than to blaze his shot over from close range. Then Bennett once again tested Hall's reflexes but again the young keeper was up to it. However, he was powerles to keep out a fourth Farnborough goal 11 minutes from time as Bennett turned provider for Connolly who slotted home from point blank range after a cut back from the by line.

Goddard found N'Diaye in stoppage time but his powerful shot was eventually gathered in by a juggling Norris and a disappointing defeat was confirmed by the final whistle soon afterwards.
