Hayes & Yeading United 0
Newport County AFC 4

Hayes & Yeading United’s winless run continued as another of the relegation contenders took three points from Nas Bashir's side in convincing style on Tuesday evening at Kingfield.

United had an enforced change between the sticks as Delroy Preddie came in for the injured Carl Pentney while Fulham loanee Corey Gameiro replaced Richard Pacquette, who dropped to the bench, up front.

Hayes & Yeading could have been a goal behind in less than sixty seconds as a long throw from Tom Miller was headed out by Mark Bentley as far as Tom Doherty who hit a crisp volley that was deflected over Preddie's goal. Three minutes later though a long throw from United's Callum Morris was headed goalwards by Lloyd Owusu but County keeper Danny Potter easily gathered the ball.

A Luke Williams break from his own half ended with a shot from 18 yards that Potter fielded comfortably and then at the other end a misplaced Morris header went straight to Danny Rose who shot across the United goal and just wide of the far post.

In the 13th minute Preddie made a fine diving parry to deny Rose and when the ball was again returned from the wing, Rose's shot was deflected over by a timely Curtis Ujah challenge. Six minutes later The Exiles went even closer to breaking the deadlock when Sam Foley helped the ball on to Craig McAllister, his shot from ten yards went over Preddie's head from a Ujah touch and came back off the face of the crossbar before being cleared.

The visitors opener was only minutes away though as United again failed to deal with a long Miller throw, this time the ball being allowed to drop to the feet of Rose who struck it first time into the bottom corner giving Preddie no chance.

Louie Soares dragged the ball under control and advanced before firing over for United and then a Morris long throw was flicked on to Corey Gameiro who with his back to goal laid the ball off to James Folkes, his shot was blocked on the six yard line and when the loose ball ran to Mark Bentley, he fired over.

Newport were to score twice more before the break without United threatening their goal. First to net was Foley on 38 minutes as he moved onto a chip down the right flank that cleared Curtis Wynter, the Newport man taking a touch before lofting the ball perfectly over Preddie into the net.

County's third was right on the stroke of half-time. A corner was only partially cleared and then when the ball was played back into the danger area, Newport defender Ismail Yakubu rose highest to head home from just a few yards out.

Nas Bashir made two United changes at the commencement of the second half as Folkes and Gameiro were replaced by Daniel Wishart and Tom Collins respectively. The change almost had the opposite effect though as Newport should have scored a fourth just 40 seconds into the half as Doherty raced onto a Foley pass and clipped the ball over Preddie but it fell just wide of the target.

Four minutes later United were inches away from reducing the deficit when Williams latched onto a clearance and fired a ball across the face of Potter's goal but sadly neither Tom Cadmore or Ujah could get that elusive final touch and the ball went away for a goal-kick.

Soares then had a shot that Potter held before at the other end Rose was inches wide with a volley from Miller's cross and this was quickly followed by a snapshot from former United favourite Elliott Buchanan that rippled the side netting of Preddie's goal.

The icing on the cake for the visitors that secured their second 4-0 scoreline against United came on 76 minutes when Rose's right wing centre was met by a diving Yakubu at the far post and he powered his header beyond Preddie for his second of the evening.

Doherty and David Pipe both had chances to increase the scoreline before the end but the final whistle couldn't come quick enough as is summed up by Nas's comments reported in the Gazette on-line here.
