Manager Nas Bashir made just one enforced change to the side that won so well up at Southport the previous week as Sam Argent returned at right-back for the injured Yassin Moutaouakil.

For the third season running, Cambridge United failed to score a League goal at Hayes & Yeading, sadly this time around the home side also failed to find the net and a rather tame stalemate resulted.

The first of very few chances came the way of Hayes & Yeading in the sixth minute when Daniel Wishart flicked on a Steve Arnold clearance to strike partner Tom Collins, Cambridge defender James Jennings did well to force him wide before blocking the United strikers angled shot.

Collins went close again less than ten minutes later as he collected a Dwane Lee pass, hitting a curling effort that just failed to dip into the far top corner. Arnold's first save was comfortable enough as he gathered a long range effort from Harry Pell. Cambridge were now coming into the game, Luke Berry picked out Jack Eades, his angled shot from just inside the box failing to trouble Arnold.

Ten minutes from the break, Arnold clawed away a right side corner, the ball fell perfectly to Rossi Jarvis who saw his fierce shot well blocked by Luke Williams before Berry almost cleared the roof of the stand with the follow up shot.

Minutes later a long Lee throw was met with a looping header from Pelé but his effort was too high and landed on the roof of the Cambridge goal. Minutes before the break a surge from midfield into the area by United's on loan midfielder Piero Mingoia led to him shooting wide of the target under intense pressure from the Cambridge defence.

Sadly it didn't get much better after the break as it was defence's fully on top with neither keeper really being tested once again. In fact one of the best chances of the half was to come just 45 seconds in when Mingoia raced away down the left flank before pulling the ball back to Jamie Hand, his shot deflecting side of the heel of Rory McAuley.

Cambridge then had a good spell of possession on or around the hour mark. Andy Pugh fired well wide when well placed and having just been sent into the action, Cambridge striker Michael Gash flicked on neatly to Pugh but his drive went just over Arnold's crossbar. Next to try his luck was Jarvis but his curling effort was easily dealt with by Arnold. Still the visitors pushed on, Pugh led Gash into the United area but his shot was blocked wide by the ever dependable Tom Cadmore.

Ten minutes from time United were reduced to ten men when a Lee tackle was deemed dangerous by referee Merchant who showed the United man a straight red card and the four match ban that is certain to follow ends the midfielders season.

With ten men it was a point the home side now really had to hold onto. Jennings crossed deep to Jonathon Thorpe, his head back across goal rolling just out of the reach of the outstretched foot of Gash before going wide. The visitors really should have nailed it on 90 minutes though when Jarvis slipped the ball inside the area to Pugh but he rushed and with just Arnold to beat sliced his shot wide of the target.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time it could have been so sweet for the home side as Julian Owusu broke away onto a Williams pass, his cross from the right of the Cambridge box finding Hand but his effort was well blocked by a chasing defender. There was still time for a scare at the other end though as Cambridge broke away on the right side with Thorpe, his cross was part cleared by Cadmore but only as far as Berry who fired over from the edge of the United area.
