Hayes & Yeading United 6
Wealdstone 2

A blistering start from the attacking department allowed Hayes & Yeading United's reserve team to cruise to victory over Wealdstone on a very wet evening at Church Road.

In fact it only took 36 seconds for United to get a shot at goal, Daniel Wishart hitting the ball firmly but missing the post by inches.

And just another minute later, Wishart's pass was intercepted by Adam Ward but Daryl McLean got to the loose ball first and hit a long range shot which Stones' keeper Sean Thomas caught.

It was of little surprise that United were to open the scoring sooner rather than later, and they did so in the fifth minute. Elliott Buchanan's pass was seized upon by Andy Yiadom who beat Sean Counane before his pace took him through on goal. The former Watford winger lobbed the advancing Thomas and the ball dipped under the crossbar.

Weladstone went very close to an equaliser soon afterwards when Pierrick Briand was dispossessed by Charlie Nicholls and his cross shot was slid towards goal by Joey Collewijn. However, Charlie Wassmer did brilliantly to position himself on the line to clear.

It proved vital, because within seven more minutes, United scored two more goals, and they just so happened to both be absolute screamers. First, after Phil Appiah won the ball with a firm challenge in midfield, Nathan Webb chipped the ball forward and although he was some distance away from goal, Buchanan controlled the ball on his chest before unleashing a thunderous volley which flew past Thomas's outstretched hand. Then, Buchanan turned provider as his square pass was thumped in off the underside of the crossbar by Daniel Wishart, again from outside the area.

United's defence were caught out on 21 minutes as Collewijn broke clear of the back line and finished coolly past Alban Guibout to pull a goal back for Wealdstone. However, their joy was shortlived as just minutes later, Buchanan found the top corner with a firmly hit free kick. Incredibly, by half an hour it was 5-1, and a rather embarrassing moment for referee Matthew Downey came as Webb passed to Yiadom who cut into the penalty area and saw his rising shot deflect into the top corner off Ward. Somehow, Mr Downey hadn't realised that the ball was nestling in the back of the net and he signalled for a corner, only to be corrected by the players and his assistant!

United were rampant now and Webb broke from midfield. As defenders stood off him, he created enough space for a shot, but Thomas blocked bravely.

Nicholls did get an effort on target for Wealdstone but Wassmer was again able to block. Then before half time, Buchanan, in search of a hat-trick, volleyed just wide after a short corner routine involving Jack Pattison and Appiah.

United swapped keepers for the second half and Wealdstone made changes too. The tempo of the second half was more sedate although Yiadom went close with a shot and McLean made Thomas save his long range free kick. Appiah, who had a fine game in midfield, also went close with a piledriver from way out which just cleared the crossbar.

United were to claim their sixth and last goal on 70 minutes, and it was Yiadom who claimed his hat-tick, collecting Appiah's pass and bursting through before slotting the ball into the far corner.

Buchanan went close to joining him on a hat-trick, but Thomas showed good reactions to pounce on his near post shot from Pattison's low centre.

Wealdstone got a consolation when substitute Tyler Hampton capitalised on hesitant defending to go one on one with Aldi Haxhia, and he placed his shot well into the bottom corner. Haxhia did deny the same player soon afterwards, and this save preserved the four goal advantage that United held onto until the final whistle, claiming three league points which takes them to the top of the table.
