Hayes & Yeading United 3
Ashford Town (Middx) 0

Paul Hughes’ Hayes & Yeading United reserve side completed their Capital League season undefeated and in doing so regained the West Division title courtesy of a 3-0 victory over Ashford Town (Middlesex) in the Clubs last ever fixture at Church Road.

United started well with James Comley testing Ashford keeper Tom Grant just a couple of minutes into the game as his swerving 25 yard effort bounced away from the keepers arms but with nobody on hand to challenge, Grant gathered the loose ball.

The lead for the home side was only a minute away though as a quick throw-in by Anthony Morrison picked out under 18 striker Nicke Kabamba, his sharp turn and shot beating Grant into the far corner of the Ashford net.

Ashford’s first test of United skipper Delroy Preddie came in the 18th minute when a free-kick from the left of the area was fired goalwards by Kelz Muduki, the United keeper being forced to tip his shot over the bar.

The same player did beat Preddie ten minutes later when having been played in by Ola Kukuyi, the Ashford striker hit a shot from the edge of the area that crashed back into play off the upright.

Kabamba came closest to finding the net in the final 15 minutes of the half when he made space for himself just outside the area and hit a shot that was inches wide of the target.

The first effort of the second period came from the visitors and again from the boot of Muduki who cut in from the left before firing a 20 yard shot wide of the post.

Preddie was again forced into action just after the hour mark when a cheeky effort from all of 35 yards by Liam Heffer had the United stopper back-peddaling before tipping the ball over his goal.

This close shave seemed to push United on towards a second and it duly arrived two minutes later when Kabamba collected a long ball from the back by running between two defenders and calmly slotting it past a static Grant who had chosen to stay on his line.

With United now fully in control, substitute Jack Pattison won the ball in the centre circle and made his way towards the Ashford goal, hitting a 20 yard drive that was well pushed away by a diving Grant.

Minutes later victory was assured as another substitute, reserve top scorer Daniel Wishart exchanged passes with Kabamba before outpacing a defender to slide the ball past Grant for United’s third of the evening.

Grant was soon in action again, this time pushing away a 20 yard effort from Alex Sunasky. The final chance of the game fell to the visitors as Emmanuel Akenfena dispossessed Isaac Bonket before hitting a shot that Preddie caught comfortably.

And so Hayes & Yeading’s United’s final Club game at Church Road has passed, we must however look onwards and upwards – here’s to next season, it’s going to be a tough one.
