Wrexham 3

Garry Haylock named the same side that had won so well at Darlington the previous week with fit again keeper Lee Harrison replacing Charlie Wassmer on the bench while Ahmed Deen's return from international duty saw him replace the departed James Mulley, also on the bench.

Dean Saunders' Wrexham came to town with a central defensive pairing totaling 70+ years and showed United an experienced solid heart that we were to be unable to penetrate, although the final score differential very much flattered the visitors with two late goals giving it a very lop-sided tilt.

The first half saw both sides matching and canceling each other out with few clear-cut chances to speak of being created. The first opening came the way of the visitors when Lee Brown tried to head a bouncing ball back to Josh Lennie in the United goal, a less than perfect connection saw Andy Morrell get to the ball first but Lennie did well to block his shot out for a corner.

Two chances came at the other end in quick succession, both falling to left-back Brown. The first saw Lewis Ferrell spray the ball to Michael Malcolm on the left, he in turn played the ball into Brown's run only for former Rangers favourite Marvin Andrews to slide his huge frame into the firing line blocking the ball wide of the target. Brown's next effort saw him pick up a Bradley Pritchard throughball before firing across the face of Chris Maxwell's goal.

With most of the half being played in the centre third of the pitch, it was no surprise that the next opening saw a run from that very area from Morrell who raced away down the left and cut into the box only to be stopped from picking out a team-mate in the middle by an excellent tracking block from Adam Bygrave.

Five minutes before the break the visitors again went close when Andy Mangan
found space on the left and fired the ball with the outside of his foot across Lennie's six yard box but just out of the range of his arriving colleagues.

United made a positive start to the second half and should maybe have taken the lead less than a minute in when Malcolm and Pritchard combined to set up Andy Yiadom, the youngster glided past one defender but then chipped weakly into Maxwell's grateful arms.

The second then began to resemble the first and it really did look like one goal either way would secure the points and just before the hour mark a sweeping move up the left flank saw Mangan outstrip Ferrell before picking out Jay Harris in the centre and his instinctive flick saw Lennie beaten for the first time in two and a half games.

Despite going behind, United rarely looked like breeching the Wrexham defence, Liam Enver-Marum replaced
Pătulea who had worked hard but to little effect and minutes later Elliott Buchanan replaced the industrious Yiadom. It was indeed Buchanan who came closest to pulling United level ten minutes from time when he was picked out by Jamie Hand, the striker's volley dipping just over Maxwell's goal.

With the home side trying to push as many bodies forwards as they could, it was no real surprise in the 83rd minute when Wrexham caught them on the break. A long punt from the back could only be helped on by Tom Cadmore, Gareth Taylor latched onto the ball and as Lennie came out he squared it to substitute Adrian Cieslewicz who had the easy task of finding the vacant net.

Minutes later it could have been worse when Curtis Obeng picked out Taylor with a low drilled free-kick, Lennie making a fine block and grab at close range. Taylor however was not to be denied as he fired home from 20 yards in stoppage time after good work on the left from Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Cieslewicz.
