Despite having the lions share of possession, Hayes & Yeading United’s Under 18 side fell to defeat in their opening Ryman Youth League game against Woking at a rain soaked Church Road.

The new look United side started well with early efforts from Mark Goodman and a Daniel Wishart free-kick failing to test Cardinals keeper Matt Peglar.

On 17 minutes Peglar was required though, Wishart fed the ball to Goodman who despite being tackled managed to lay the ball off to Jack Todd, his shot being touched around the post by Peglar. The resultant corner by Wishart was cleared straight back to the wide man but his effort took a touch off a defender before going wide of the far post.

Midway through the half the Cardinals almost took a shock lead as the ball bounced across the United box, huge striker Ola Sogdanmu beat keeper Alex Tokarczyk in the air only for skipper Nathan Webb to clear off the line.

Ten minutes later the deadlock was broken by the visitors and once more it was the imposing figure of Sogdanmu that did the damage. Keeper Tokarczyk had just received treatment that was to see him replaced at half time, when a failure to clear on the right side of defence led to the ball being fed to the Woking striker who fired into the bottom corner from just inside the area.

Early in the second half Woking went close to netting a second when a corner fell nicely to Aaron Gough but the centre-back’s shot on the turn was inches wide of Rourke Pickford’s goal. Play immediately swung to the other end as Goodman forced a save from Peglar with a drive from the edge of the area on what was now a sodden and slippery pitch.

Although a more even half possession wise it was United who continued to push forwards looking for the elusive equaliser. Wishart brought a good save from Peglar before the impressive Tomas Jansons sprayed the ball cross field to Wishart who in turn found substitute Jamie Enver but he blazed over the bar from just inside the area.

Five minutes remained and United were hit on the break, a long punt into the left channel was latched onto by Sogdanmu who advanced and drove a shot across Pickford that the keeper did well to get a hand to but could not keep out, effectively sealing victory for the visitors.

There was still time for United to create a couple more openings though. Jansons again played the ball to the left, this time finding full-back Joel Jacobs, his centre was met by Maccabee Thomas but he could not keep his header down. Right on the whistle Josh Christopher and Wishart created another chance for Thomas, this time Peglar was in his way and the danger was averted by the stubborn Woking defence.
