A late and rather fortuitous strike from Mark Goodman eight minutes from time was enough to earn Hayes & Yeading United a share of the points at Bellmountwood Avenue in their latest Allied Counties League Premier Division match.

The match was somewhat spoiled by a blustery wind and a bumpy pitch which made controlling the ball difficult for both sides. Having said that, within 36 seconds, Cameron Gilmartin fashioned the first chance for United, but spun his chip just wide of the right hand post.

United had the wind behind them in the first half and took advantage by dominating for large periods. A weak goal kick from Jack Lupton was pounced upon by Maccabee Thomas and his low centre was met by Cyrus Longdon-Hughes whose shot was gathered in by a diving Luke Carney.

A Mitchell Dunstall free-kick caused panic in front of the Sun Postal goal as Reece Fleary almost bundled the ball in but instead watched it bounce wide. Then, following a quick break, Sun Postal went close when Dan Savage’s cross floated onto the crossbar and James Nortey-Silke made a crucial headed clearance.

Gilmartin linked up with Goodman twice afterwards, but was off target with both efforts, the first an overhead volley and the second a chip from the edge of the area. Then Thomas raced onto Andre James’s free kick but could only turn his shot from a tight angle into the side netting.

In stoppage time, Tomas Jansons fired just wide from outside the box after Bobby Cumber’s free kick was only half cleared. Then Gilmartin hit a fierce wind assisted free kick but Carney was able to acrobatically tip the ball over the bar.

Sun Postal had the wind in the second half and they took advantage by taking the lead nine minutes in, Cumber slicing Dominic David’s cross into his own net as he misread the flight of the ball.

Sun Postal dominated possession for a long time afterwards. Lee Hopkins’s free kick just evaded David at the far post and drifted a yard wide. Then Rourke Pickford was required to keep out long shots from Owen Smith, Hopkins and David. But Sun Postal seemed to tire in the last ten minutes and minutes after James had sent Goodman through one on one and his shot was charged down by Carney, Goodman collected the ball from Jay Middleton, advanced and somewhat sliced his shot which nevertheless curled into the top corner for an equaliser.
