Hayes & Yeading United 2
Staines Town 1

When Hayes & Yeading and Staines meet at under 18 level you can guarantee you will see a game played the way the purists feel it should be as both sides like to pass the ball rather than rely on the long ball game.

This was evident very early on as both sides played their way forwards only to be repelled by equally safe defences until the 13th minute when George Isaac played a perfect ball that dissected the Swans back line and allowed Daniel Wishart to race ahead, round keeper Danny Sonner who was outside his area, and stroke the ball into the empty net.

Despite some good build up play, we saw few clear cut chances in the remaining half hour of the first period. Adam Cole was wayward from 20 yards for the visitors as was team mate Bradley Murray shortly after. In between these two chances for the Swans, United had a good chance of their own when Josh Christopher slid the ball down the right flank to Mark Goodman but his attempted lob stayed in play wide of the far post.

The final minute of the half had the hosts holding their breath as Cole and Murray exchanged passes with the formers shot from the edge of the box going just wide of Alex Tokarczyk’s post.

The second half was to be a far more open affair and the Swans announced their intentions immediately when substitute Liam Devine’s centre was headed straight to Cole but he screwed his shot wide when well placed.

Minutes later an excellent passing interchange between Cole, Azainia Brown and Nathaniel Beckett saw the full-back advance into the area but his final shot was held by Tokarczyk.

United then began to make advances of their own, Wishart was close to a second after good work from Cyrus Longdon-Hughes and Isaac before Joel Jacobs forced Sonner to save at the foot of the post from a curling free-kick.

Wishart then shot across goal and wide after being slid in by Isaac and just as United seemed to have regained control of play an equaliser appeared. United conceded a needless free-kick on the right wing, Devine stepped up and noticing Tokarczyk off his line fired an inch perfect shot over the United stopper and into the far corner.

Chances were now coming quickly at either end, within seconds of pulling level Staines almost had a second when Murray broke on the left and crossed to the near post, Ben Nicholson got to the ball first but his touch went just wide of the upright. Play moved back to the other end and a miss-hit clearance span through to Goodman but he delayed his shot and was denied by a well timed Alfie Arthur interception.

Minutes later Goodman delivered though, Bobby Cumber played a free-kick forwards that Joakim Ehui flicked on to Goodman who this time hit his shot across Sonner first time giving the keeper little chance to move as the ball shot past him to give United the lead once more.

Staines then began to push for a second leveller, Devine’s cross field pass found Cole but Tokarczyk was equal to his effort before United were caught square at the back as a pass straight from the middle of the park saw Devine nip in but his shot was weak and Tokarczyk again saved.

By now Devine was causing United all sorts of problems and with just 8 minutes to go he fired a deep cross that was met by Tom Kanek only for Tokarczyk to reach backwards to claw out his header before the United keeper grasped the ball gratefully to his chest.

No more scares came United's way but in stoppage time the advantage could have been doubled when Wishart picked off a loose ball outside the Swans area, his effort from 20 yards going just wide of the target.
