Hayes & Yeading United 6
Wingate & Finchley 3

United’s reserve side under the temporary stewardship of Darron Wilkinson opened their Capital League campaign with an exciting 6-3 win over Wingate & Finchley at the Warren on Wednesday evening.

Three of Garry Haylock’s first team squad were given a run out, namely Delroy Preddie, Marc Canham and Toby Little and it was the latter who found space on the left before playing the ball inside via Alex Duffy to Mo Dikuiza. The United midfielder hitting a 30 yard shot that left Wingate keeper Callum Horton motionless as the ball nestled in the bottom corner to give United a second minute lead.

Minutes later Little was again on the move, this time cutting in from the left and hitting a shot with his weaker right that Horton comfortably gathered. United continued to press for a second and once more Little was the catalyst as he worked through the middle to find space for a shot, Horton blocked with his legs and as the ball went up it was met by Jack Pattison but his header was caught by Horton who was quickly back on his feet.

Still in the first 15 minutes it was Canham’s turn to play provider as he slid a pass down the right channel to Scott Orphanou, the striker advancing into the box and hitting a shot that Horton did well to palm away, the ball came back to the United striker but the angle was now far too acute and Horton saved.

It was fully 20 minutes before the visitors were to put Preddie’s goal under any pressure as twice in a minute shots came in from Jake Furman. The first was well blocked by Jack Rooney and the second saw a slight deflection do enough to take it wide of the post. Wingate finally gave Preddie some work just before the half hour mark when Paul Wright found the lively Dean Williams who headed down to his strike partner David Laird but the United stopper coolly plucked his curling effort out of the air.

Minutes later United increased their lead when Pattison slotted the ball into the path of Little and he nonchalantly lobbed the ball over the advancing Horton.

Five minutes later the Blues were back in the hunt courtesy of a double misjudgment at the back. A long punt from defence saw Ross Crawford miss-time his leap and as the ball went over his head and bounced Preddie raced from goal to head clear, he also misjudged the bounce as it skidded off a very wet pitch and despite covering defender Rooney getting to the ball first it struck Williams and went in off the crossbar.

On the stroke of half time United could have had a third as Canham and Little combined only for Horton to claw away Little’s shot.

The second half didn’t start well and again a mix up at the back allowed the visitors to find the net. A scramble around the United goal saw Crawford mis-kick a clearance that forced Preddie to slide out to gather, the ball escaping his grasp on the greasy surface and when it was centred Laird had the easy task of smashing home an equaliser from close range.

This seemed to give United a jolt and just six minutes later the lead was restored. Canham played the ball in from the right and Horton looked favourite to gather but for the speed of Orphanou who got to the ball first, turned quickly and rolled it to Pattison who then had the easy task of firing past the retreating Horton.

A neat move from the visitors on the hour saw a Wright free-kick flicked on by Williams to substitute Ryan Nelson but his low drive was well saved by Preddie at the foot of his post. Just five minutes later Horton was beaten again, once more due to Orphanou’s sharpness around goal as he latched onto a Josh Andrew header before being tripped as he tried to round the keeper. Dikuiza stepped up to take the penalty, his weak kick was saved by Horton but he was then first to the rebound and netted his second of the game.

Next to get in on the act was Josh Andrew on 72 minutes. Canham and Little combined well in the middle of the park before releasing substitute Mark Doyle who advanced into the area before picking out Andrew on the far side, the former FEDO man rifling in an unstoppable volley from twelve yards.

The sixth for United came in the final minute of normal time when Canham played the ball from the left to Doyle in the centre who despite close attention from his marker turned and planted a perfect curling shot into the far corner of Horton’s net.

There was however still time for yet another defensive mix up to gift Wingate a third as Max Martin was allowed straight through the middle before being presented with an open goal to just roll the ball home.
