York City 4
Hayes & Yeading United

Congratulations to all at York City for getting the pitch playable for Saturday's game but unfortunately for United after holding our own in the first half we were somewhat overrun after the break, with the hosts being aided by the dismissal of United skipper Tom Cadmore on 52 minutes for a professional foul.

The high riding Minstermen were quickly out of the blocks and just three minutes in a vital boot from Ram Marwa managed to deflect a driven free-kick from Michael Rankine wide of the target. Minutes later a long ball from the middle of the pitch went over Adam Green's head to be controlled by City's Alex Lawless who took a touch before seeing his shot from the corner of the box rise too high to trouble Simon Overland.

United's first foray forwards came in the 9th minute when Matt Ruby played the ball forwards to Esmond James, playing in a more central role, he promptly turned Daniel Parslow and broke into the area firing across goal where David McGurk slid the ball in touch at the far post.

Play immediately switched back to the other end, Chris Carruthers played the ball in low from the left to Richard Brodie, his shot was blocked out at close range by Overland and when the loose ball ran to Rankine his shot at an almost vacant goal was superbly blocked on the line by Green.

The midway point arrived and a quick throughball saw the League's top scorer Brodie clean through on goal, a heavy touch took the ball past Overland and Brodie hit the deck, while United fans feared the worst referee Curry pointed for a goal kick and duly cautioned the striker for simulation.

The opener for the Minstermen was only minutes away though, Cadmore was caught in possession by Brodie who crossed to the near post where Carruthers appeared to stumble over the ball and it diverted past Overland into the United net.

Not to be put off their game, United were soon on the attack as Dale Binns fed the ball to Toby Little on the left, he cut inside a defender before firing goalwards with his shot being well cut out by the head of Luke Graham.

A flurry of chances came just before the break as first Rankine tried his luck from just outside the box only for Overland to comfortably field his effort. At the other end Steve Basham held the ball up on the left before finding Marc Canham inside, play was quickly switch to Danny Allen-Page on the right and he tried his luck from 25 yards but City stopper Michael Ingham held. In stoppage time it was thanks to Overland that the deficit remained at one as he did well to push a Brodie shot around the post.

The second half certainly didn't start to plan as just 90 seconds had been played when York grabbed a second courtesy of another defensive error. Carruthers played a free-kick to the far post, Overland elected to punch but only manager to push the ball back into the middle where Brodie forced the ball past the two United men on the line from about ten yards.

Five minutes later the task became even harder as Brodie charged on goal Cadmore was adjudged to have tripped him on the edge of the box and Mr Curry brandished a straight red card to the United skipper. As a result Binns was sacrificed from midfield and Sami El-Abd came from the bench to bring the defence up to strength. The resultant free-kick saw a Rankine drive deflected wide by the wall.

Rankine then headed wide from a Carruthers corner when well positioned before a long ball from the back saw Brodie collect and dance around Overland, who was outside his area, before chipping over the recovering defenders from 20 yards for his second of the game.

York continued to create chances which the ten men of United could only repel as no forward flow was being achieved. Having just netted his second, Brodie was after a second and having gone through against Overland he again ended up on the floor appealing for a spot kick. Somewhat strangely this time the referee again pointed for a goal kick but did not brandish a card as he had done in the first half, a minute later he was withdrawn and replaced by Kevin Gall.

Still City pressed, another substitute in the form of Michael Gash slid a perfect throughball to Carruthers who was denied by Overland who was quickly out to block his shot away. Gall then went close after being set up by Alex Lawless and minutes later Carruthers latched onto an Allen-Page clearance but his volley went just the wrong side of the upright.

With eight minutes remaining Gash was denied by the woodwork as his shot from the edge of the area beat Overland but came back off the post, the United keeper was beaten again sixty seconds later though as a long punt saw the United defence appear to freeze which allowed Gall to round Overland and roll the ball home for number four.

Four was still not enough as City continued to press, Gall volleyed wide at the far post before a slick passing move involving Gash, Gall and Lawless saw the latter chip the ball just over the bar from distance.

Stoppage time brought two corners for United and the second of these saw Ingham finally beaten as substitute Scott Fitzgerald rose first to head home Esmond James' kick at the near post for a very subdued consolation.
