Hayes & Yeading United 1
Leyton Orient 1

Hayes & Yeading United had a good pre-season workout on Tuesday evening against League One side Leyton Orient whose starting XI included 6 of those who had started in the 6-1 thrashing of Newcastle United three days earlier.

United started well and in just the sixth minute Danny Allen-Page slipped the ball to Ram Marwa just inside the area, his shot was well blocked and cleared by Luke Ashworth, the ball was then picked up by Adam Green on the left who in turn found Dale Binns, he turned his marker before firing wide of the far post.

Minute 13 could have proved unlucky for United when a right wing cross from Harry Baker found Ryan Jarvis in front of goal but he had to stretch for the ball and could only touch it into keeper Simon Overland’s arms.

The East Londoners put together a neat move minutes later when Loick Pires played a fine ball across the park to Jarvis, his knock down looked to have put former England under-21 James Scowcroft through only for United skipper Tom Cadmore to take the ball off his toes with a well timed challenge.

On 25 minutes United took the lead, Binns swept down the left before firing the ball across the six yard box where Allen-Page arrived to power a header past O’s keeper Jamie Jones from close range.

The lead sadly was to last just nine minutes as Overland appeared to mis-judge Jarvis’s right wing cross and as the ball slipped from his grasp Scowcroft was on hand to apply the easiest of finishes by heading into an open goal.

The last chance of the first period came a couple of minutes later when a James Mulley throw was flicked on by Rob Gradwell to Allen-Page who hit a first time shot that went inches wide of the far post.

Seven minutes after the break Scowcroft and Jarvis again combined to cause problems for United, the latter opting to try and chip the ball past Overland but his effort was too high. United then saw Justin Cochrane send Mulley on his way, the midfielder avoiding two challenges before seeing the ball bobble just as he hit a shot that ended up well wide of the target.

Just after the hour mark, and with a second striker in the form of Scott Fitzgerald on the pitch, United again moved forwards as Marc Canham nodded the ball to Fitzgerald but his effort was comfortably dealt with by Jones as was a similar effort a few minutes later.

The O’s then had a number of chances to take home a victory. Jimmy Smith tried his luck from the edge of the box going just past the angle and on 17 minutes a direct run into the area by Pires, his effort passing Overland only to be superbly headed off the line by the retreating Green.

Just eight minutes remained when Jarvis was played through before being bundled over by a combination of Mulley and Cadmore with referee Mr Thompson duly pointing to the spot. Jarvis himself took the kick only to be denied by a fine diving save from Overland who pushed the ball around the post.

Last chance of the game came in stoppage time when substitute Toby Little fired in a tantalising free-kick from the right that was missed by all and sundry before going wide of the far post.
