Hayes & Yeading United started 2010 in the same manner that 2009 was ended, with a victory at Church Road, this one being all the sweeter as it put to bed the nightmare from six days ago at Kingsmeadow.

Manager Garry Haylock made one enforced change to
the side that started against Ebbsfleet as Scott Fitzgerald came in for the injured Steve Basham, Fitzgerald's place on the bench being taken by Staforde Palmer.

The game was slow to get going and despite having a good amount of early possession the Wombles made hard work of getting anywhere near the United defence. The first noteworthy chance came the way of United on 17 minutes when Marc Canham played a short free-kick to Danny Allen-Page, his deep cross was met at the far post by Toby Little who headed down to Fitzgerald but his shot was rushed and went wide of the upright.

Hayes & Yeading were now beginning to ascert themselves on Wimbledon and Allen-Page's run and cross from the right side was well controlled in the middle by Fitzgerald only for his shot on the turn to be blocked wide by a gang tackle from Ben Judge and
Paul Lorraine.

Skipper Tom Cadmore was miles too high from a free-kick on the edge of the area before the Wombles gave United a first real cause for concern on 38 minutes when Sam Hatton and Lewis Taylor combined on the right before crossing to Jon Main who inexplicably missed his header only for the ball to strike Allen-Page and bounce just wide of his own goal.

The half closed with another Cadmore effort, this time getting his head to a Canham corner but at full stretch he was unable to guide the ball onto the target.

The Wombles came out quicker after the break and could have taken the lead just two minutes in when a dangerous bouncing ball in the United area saw Main stick out a boot but thankfully the ball went just wide of Simon Overland's goal. Minutes later Main had another golden chance to open the scoring when Taylor ran from his own half to the United bye-line before a nifty back heel set up a chance for Brett Johnson to cross, he duly picked out his striker but Main headed over from ten yards out.

The visitors continued to have a bit of a purple patch and Overland saw some action on 55 minutes when Luis Cumbers played the ball inside from the right to Montague who shot through a crowd of players but Overland was easily equal to his effort.

Minutes later Wimbledon boss Terry Brown threw former Church Road favourite Will Hendry into the fray and I'm sure this was not the plan but within a minute United were ahead. Allen-Page and Fitzgerald exchanged passes on the right and while it looked like they had dwelled too long, a lay back by the latter to Canham saw him fire a perfect cross that was met at the far post by Ram Marwa who headed past Seb Brown for his first goal of the season.

With United in front it was quite surprising how few chances the visitors created although credit must go to the whole United team for the speed in which the visitors were closed down in possession. Also, Overland twice had to be quick to charge from his line to kick clear as that long ball that worked so well for the Wombles on Boxing Day was snubbed out.

In fact the biggest scare came in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Adam Green scooped a wrong footed clearance straight into the air in his own box, Overland got a fist to it before being alert enough to dive and smother the loose ball. The final three minutes of the stoppage time saw Fitzgerald and James struggling with knocks but the side battled on and kept Wimbledon at bay for a vital three points.
