A new look Hayes & Yeading United side were given a stern test in their first Southern Youth League fixture and ended up losing a nine goal thriller.

It was a good start for United as Cedric Da Veiga was tripped by the Camberley goalkeeper and Jake Lovell confidently despatched the penalty.

United custodian Rourke Pickford kept United ahead with two fine blocks before Mitchell Dunstall tested the home keeper once again with a 20 yard low drive from Dan Blackwood’s layoff. Dunstall also fired a free kick just wide but just before half time, United got a scare when a free header at the far post rose just over Pickford’s cross bar.

United almost doubled their lead within seconds of the restart. Jake Edmunds’ cross was almost converted by Blackwood whose first time half volley was superbly saved. Lovell’s follow up was also blocked.

Camberley hit the cross bar after good close control in the area and at the other end Lovell brought another fine save from the home keeper following a one two with Blackwood, but Camberley got an equaliser out of the blue when Pickford fumbled a cross from the right and the ball was bundled in.

United responded positively and Lovell restored the lead on 66 minutes when he got on the end of Da Veiga’s throughball and finished off the far post.

But astonishingly, Camberley were to score five times in an eleven minute spell soon afterwards. First a speculative 30 yard lob arced into the goal, then Adrian Temple conceded a penalty by tripping the attacker he was marking, which was converted. A low close range finish made it four and straight away, it was five when a cross drifted in over Pickford’s head.

Another low finish made it 6-2 before the goal of the game, a 30 yard rasping free kick to complete Lovell’s hat-trick acted as a consolation.
