Hayes & Yeading United 6
Northwood 0
Half-Time: 2-0 Referee: Mr M Englebretson

Hayes & Yeading United swept aside reigning Allied Counties League Champions Northwood with a masterful display at Church Road on Monday evening.

United dominated possession early on, but it wasn’t until the 13th minute when their first meaningful chance brought about the first goal. Ashley Barnes broke free on the right flank and his cross was headed home by Jake Lovell.

Josh Andrew thought he’d extended the lead six minutes later when he ran onto Barnes’ throughball and fired his shot goalwards, but a brilliant fingertip save by Ross Thompson diverted the ball onto the inside of the post and the danger was cleared.

Unfortunately for Thompson, the second goal came almost immediately afterwards. Brice Boyer’s pass out wide was seized upon by Daniel Wishart who got to the bye line and cut the ball back to Lovell who applied the low finish.

Minutes later, Max Duffy’s corner for Northwood was met by Ryan Lee but his header just cleared the crossbar. Both Lovell and Andrew fired over soon afterwards, but half time came without any further addition to the score.

The beginning of the second half saw Northwood’s best chance of the match as Jake O’Meara curled a shot towards the top corner only for Simon Grant to superbly claw the ball away one handed at full stretch.

However, Northwood’s hopes of a revival were dashed on 51 minutes when Andrew picked out Lovell in the box and his low finish gave him his third hat-trick of the season. Minutes later, Andrew was setting up Nathan Webb who was unfortunate to see his lob come back off the post.

It wasn’t long before United were to claim their fourth goal. Substitute Joakim Ehui’s first touch was a firm shot which Thompson palmed into the path of Andrew who had the simple task of slotting the ball into the far corner.

United continued to press although both Wishart and Andrew were wasteful in front of goal from good positions.
Wishart was to make up for this twice in the last ten minutes. His first finish came on the rebound after Thompson had denied both Mark Goodman and Ashley Barnes, he then latched onto Mitchell Dunstall’s pass before cutting inside and applying a low finish past Thompson.

And United were only denied a seventh by a brilliant block by Thompson which denied Barnes a deserved goal following good work on the left by Wishart.
