Half-Time: 0-4 Referee: Mr P Smith

Hayes & Yeading strolled to victory at Chesham on Thursday evening as the home side played as higher back line as I have ever seen which allowed the pace of our forwards to raid at will although Jake Lovell did find his nemesis in keeper Tom Padget whom he just could not beat.

Things started well for Simon East’s side and within 12 minutes we were two goals ahead and it could have been more. In just the second minute Daniel Wishart ran onto a through ball but as he tried to round Padget the keeper got a touch that took the ball wide of the target. United and Wishart were not to be denied though, five minutes later an almost identical move saw Wishart shoot past Padget and into the Chesham net.

Wishart again went close before Charlie Wassmer played the ball through the centre of the Chesham defence for Ashley Barnes to run onto, round Padget, and roll into the net for number two.

In just the 16th minute it should have been three. Wishart again raced away on the left before picking out Lovell in the centre, the striker being denied as his shot came back off the face of the crossbar. Lovell was then twice to be denied by Padget in identical fashion as he moved unabated through the centre of the defence only to be denied by Padget who refused to be beaten by the Hayes & Yeading top scorer.

Ten minutes before the break the third finally did arrive, Wishart being picked out on the left of the box by Abdula Nsubuga, the wide man heading the ball over his marker before lofting the ball over the advancing Padget.

Wassmer was then denied by a good Padget diving catch before Wishart provided a cross field pass that Barnes collected, turned his marker, and fired past Padget.

The final minute of the half saw the home side finally advance towards Simon Grant’s goal when a corner was met by the head of Tom Kennedy but he was just wide of the target.

The second half started in the same vein with Hayes & Yeading pushing for more goals. Within seconds of the re-start Joakim Ehui had sent Barnes through but he was denied by Padget and then a minute later Lovell also went through on goal, this time he rounded Padget only for Jordan Jenkins to clear his shot off the line.

With ten minutes of the second half played Chesham found some forwards motion and indeed found the back of the Hayes & Yeading net when a cross from the left saw Reece Fleary lose his footing which allowed George House to collect the ball and fire past Grant from the edge of the area.

Padget then did well again to deny substitute Mark Goodman before the home side pulled another back on 64 minutes after Grant completely missed a free-kick and the ball fell at the feet of Rob Goldney who tapped home. Things could have really become worrying minutes later when the ball fell nicely for Duncan Foster on the edge of the area and his shot was just inches wide of Grant’s post.

Lovell was then to be denied again by Padget as Foster was on hand to clear the loose ball with Josh Andrew lurking. The fifth did arrive five minutes later though, Lovell was upended midway into the Chesham half but referee Mr Smith seeing that the ball had run nicely to Andrew allowed play to continue and he confidently slotted home.

With the game now in its final minute it looked as if Lovell would finally get on the score sheet after a fine Nathan Webb run on the right presented a cross that the striker looked certain to score from until skipper Nsubuga beat him to the ball to tap home.

A minute later Lovell again found himself with the goal at his mercy but his luck was definitely out as he scooped the ball over the bar from Andrew’s low centre.
