Skipper Nevin Saroya got the perfect birthday present as United earned their first full points since formation with two goals in as many minutes early in the second half wiping out a half time deficit.

Manager Garry Haylock made just one change from the side that drew with Basingstoke the previous game as 19 year old Miles Jones was promoted from the reserves to cover for the suspended Staforde Palmer.

Unusually for a United game it was the opposition who were fastest out of the blocks this afternoon as Delroy Preddie had to go full stretch to gather a swinging Omari Coleman shot after just 58 seconds. Just a couple of minutes later Coleman again found himself in a good position when a wild Lloyd Blackman shot fell to the striker but he blasted over the bar from ten yards.

It didn't take long though for Nev and the boys to start showing some thrust of their own, Danny Allen-Page took the ball from Robbie Ryan before exchanging passes with Steven Gregory and crossing to the near post where Will Hendry arrived first but could not keep his effort down. The same right side combo teamed up again two minutes later, this time it was former Wing Steve Perkins who controlled with his back to go before striking on the turn but keeper Masters held his effort.

Believe it or not we had only reached the tenth minute by this time, a bouncing ball in the United six yard box fell to new Welling loanee Fabian Quintyn, his shot was half blocked by Preddie and Saroya did the rest, playing the ball off the line to safety. If this was the home sides best chance, United came just a few minutes later, excellent work again on the right by Allen-Page led to a cross that perfectly picked out an unmarked Hendry but he could not direct his header away from Masters who claimed confidently.

With United now in the ascendancy, a Tom Cadmore cross from the right was headed back across goal by Simon Martin with Gregory climbing highest only for his header to just miss the target. This was closely followed by Martin putting Hendry on goal between two defenders but in search of power he sacrificed accuracy and the ball flashed across goal and wide.

Then on 25 minutes the Wings turned the tables and broke away to score, an awkward bouncing ball in the middle of the park allowed Coleman to turn Peter Collins before the striker raced up the right wing. Collins regained his ground as Saroya covered, however Coleman brought the ball inside before unleashing a drive that gave Preddie little chance as it nestled in the corner of the United net.

This really knocked the confidence of the United side and ten minutes later we were a little fortunate not to concede a second, Preddie appeared to misjudge a Richard Carpenter free-kick that Coleman headed back to Quintyn in the centre, fortunately Gregory was on hand to hack the youngsters effort off the line.

On the stroke of half time Wings striker Coleman turned saviour at the other end, Hendry played a free-kick towards Saroya at the near post only for the covering forward to throw his head in the way and head the ball just wide of his own upright.

Whatever the gaffer said at half-time it had a almost immediate effect as United found the net twice in the first seven minutes of the second period. Perkins started the move for the first by feeding the ball wide to Gregory, his cross was touched by a defender into the path of Hendry who controlled before firing past Masters with the aid of a slight deflection off Sinclair.

With the Wings still licking their wounds, Park View Road was to bare witness to one of the best goals i've seen for a long time. A cross was headed clear by Wings defender Chris Moore only for Gregory to being the ball down and fire the perfect dipping shot from 35 yards that sailed over Masters into the far top corner of the Welling net.

We were almost caught short within sixty seconds as the swiftness of Coleman saw him race into the United box and fire goalwards only to be denied by Preddie who had come off his line to cover the angle. On the hour it was Masters turn to keep his side in the game, substitute Liam Collins sent Martin away on the right and his cross from the bye-line was met bravely at the far post by Jones but Masters stuck out a firm arm and pushed his volley from four yards away to safety.

Carpenter then fired wide for the Wings when well placed before planting a free-kick on Moore's head, the big centre-back being denied by the diving Preddie. Ten minutes from time it was Perkins denying his former paymasters when he slid to block a Daniel Maxwell shot from just inside the area. With a first win a very real possibility, United's players and supporters must have had their hearts in their mouths when the irrepressible Coleman stole possession before running on and firing goalwards only to be denied by Preddie who pushed his effort around the post.

Stoppage time, all six minutes of it, saw United hold on reasonably comfortably and in fact could have increased the lead when Liam Collins picked up a poor Sinclair clearance and sent a lob forwards with Masters well out of position but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.

Referee Mr Child then blew the final whistle and history was made, United's first ever competitive victory, may there be many more to come.
