Botwell Mission 1913-14Three players whose name starts with the letter V have represented Botwell Mission or Hayes. Of these the oldest was William Vaughan, who was the regular inside-left in 1913-14, the last season before the Great War. During the season he scored at least 14 goals – records are incomplete – including a hat-trick against Iver Athletic and a goal in the replayed final of the Southall Charity Cup, the last match of the season. It proved to be his last game, for he volunteered for service and became a lance corporal in the 6th Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders. He was killed in action on 25 March 1918, aged 25, and his body was never found. He appears in the inside-left position of the 1913-14 team photograph aside, which was brought to the attention of Hayes FC by his sister, Mrs Bessie Housley of Hayes End, in December 1974.

The next entry is hardly worthy of appearing in such illustrious company as William Vaughan. John ‘Arnie’ Venturini joined Hayes during the 1974-5 season. During his brief spell at Church Road he played in the infamous 2-5 defeat at Hampton in the Middlesex Senior Cup and was sent off after only seven minutes of the league match with Enfield for head-butting an opponent. The Hayes management was so incensed that he was sacked on the spot. But, had they read the Hayes Gazette they would have known that he was sent off in a pre-season 6-a-side tournament at Ruislip Town in July 1974, together with Robin Friday, for using abusive language while playing for South Acton against North Greenford United. He had made 6+2 appearances for the club and scored two goals. Venturini later played for Hounslow, Epsom & Ewell and Feltham. In 2006 he was still putting on the boots playing for Staines Town vets.

The last entry is J Vincent, a goalkeeper who came from Wimbledon in 1936-7 as a replacement for Reg Saphin, when he was injured, and made seven appearances.
