*** Q ***

Only three players whose name starts with the letter Q have played for Hayes, making it the fifth smallest in the alphabet, ahead of only V, U, X and Z.  However, between them they made a total of only 19 appearances.

The first of them, Simon Quail, was a forward, who had previously played for Barking, Redbridge Forest, Dartford, Sutton and Wealdstone, when he joined from Bromley in November 1995. But he stayed only a month, when he went to Hendon in exchange for Junior Haynes. During this time he made just four appearances, without scoring.

John Quille was a local boy, who came up through the reserves to make four appearances in 1964-5 at outside-right and left back. Next season he went to Maidenhead United, and was playing for Southall in 1967-8. Later, he Jimmy Quinnplayed for Uxbridge and became assistant manager at Ruislip Manor and Hounslow, and 1st team coach at Harefield in July 1977.

The last member of the trio not only made most appearances for Hayes, but was altogether the most eminent.  Jimmy Quinn came to Hayes in February 2001 when he was already in his early forties. He had previously played for a host of Football League clubs, gained international caps for Northern Ireland, and managed both Reading and Swindon Town. Dropping into non-league football, he had already played for Northwich Victoria against Hayes in October 2000, when Terry Brown recruited him from Nantwich Town to play in a Hayes side which lacked a target man up front and was struggling against relegation from the Conference. His impact was immediate. In eleven games, he not only played others into scoring positions but also netted six goals himself, including some crucial ones. At the start of the following season he was appointed manager of Northwich, and then took Shrewsbury Town back to the Football League in 2004.
